Mayflower Marina is Ship-Shape
Tuesday 15th December 2009

Plymouth’s Mayflower Marina is supporting a local businessman and keeping its berths ship-shape following a contract with specialist firm, Clean Coast Services.

Based at the mouth of the River Tamar, Mayflower Marina is sometimes affected by debris being washed into its waters. Clean Coast Services will now be on site six days a week with a purpose built, debris collection boat and tools to ensure the 400 berths remain clear.

Clean Coast Services was founded by Rikkie Carette just x months ago, following his redundancy from boat building company Princess Yachts. Princess Yachts has supported Rikkie in the business set up and even became his very first customer.

Charles Bush, managing director of Mayflower Marina, commented; "We pride ourselves on listening and acting on the feedback we get from our berth holders. Rubbish from the Sound had occasionally been noted by our customers and we acted on this. Rikkie and his team are providing a tremendous service - debris in the water can be damaging to propulsion systems, bad for the environment and unsightly."

"We offer excellent standards of cleanliness and facilities for our visitors, our contract with Clean Coast Services can help us uphold this, as well as reduce the effects of human impact on the environment. I know that this will be appreciated by our customers."

Rikkie Carette, managing director of Clean Coast Services, added; "We are all used to seeing road sweepers or dustmen on our streets clearing the rubbish but how often, if ever, do you see the shoreline, beach or harbour being cleaned?

"We are delighted to be working with Mayflower Marina. This is our first marina client and it dovetails nicely with our contract with Princess Yachts. Enlisting the support of two prestigious clients so soon after the company was established demonstrates the need for our services, and also the increasing desire to safeguard the marine environment."

Kaja Curry, Coastal Planning Coordinator for the Tamar Estuaries Consultative Forum, is also supportive of the move: "The waters of Plymouth Sound and the Tamar Estuaries have a fantastic wealth of wildlife with some of the finest natural habitats in Europe. So it is great to see Mayflower Marina taking the initiative and enlisting the employment of a company such as Clean Coast Services. So much of the region’s economy relies on our waters, for both business and pleasure, so maintaining it should be a priority. Let’s hope more businesses follow this example."
